Lymphatic Disorders
The function of the lymphatic vessels is to transport protein-rich lymph fluid from the tissues. When the lymphatic vessels do not function properly, protein-rich lymph accumulates in the tissues. Chronic lymphatic congestion can result in limb swelling, connective tissue thickening, restricted mobility, recurrent skin inflammations and erysipelas, as well as the development of skin tumors and elephantiasis.
Based on the causes of lymphedema, it can be classified as:
- Primary lymphedema: a congenital malformation of the lymphatic vessels,
- Secondary Lymphedema: Damage to the lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes due to various causes, such as inflammation, trauma, tumors, or radiation. It most commonly develops after lymph node removal or radiation therapy in breast cancer.
Treatment of lymphedema
Wearing compression medical stockings should only follow comprehensive physiotherapy treatment (manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, exercises, etc.).
