The function of the lymphatic vessels is to transport protein-rich lymph fluid from the tissues. When the lymphatic vessels do not function properly, protein-rich lymph accumulates in the tissues. Chronic lymphatic congestion can result in limb swelling, connective tissue thickening, restricted mobility, recurrent skin inflammations and erysipelas, as well as the development of skin tumors and elephantiasis.
